Low Grosses For ‘Prince Of Persia’ And ‘SATC 2′ Show Overall Box Office Drop During Month Of May

Shrek Forever After took the top spot this weekend. Despite projections that showed the Sex and the City sequel out grossing its predecessor over the busy Memorial Day weekend, it actually made less, landing in third place with about $36M, just under Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which boasted about $1M more than that. Both films fell below expectations. SATC 2 certainly wasn’t helped by terrible reviews and an ad campaign that played up its camp over its story. Read more…

Advance Sales For Midnight Screenings Of ‘Sex And The City 2′ Reach $3M

Move over fanboys. Women and gays also know how to rock a midnight screening. Sex and the City 2 has so far earned roughly $3 million for its 12 a.m. showings later tonight (or tomorrow morning to be precise). That’s a big number, especially for a chick flick where the biggest special effect is the lighting used to make Read more…

Avatar came out on top at the box office, beating out the Denzel Washington-starring biblical action/adventure extravaganza, The Book of Eli. The 3-D epic took in another $41M, bringing its domestic total just shy of the $500M mark. It has already grossed over a billion worldwide and, with this week’s earnings, it has overtaken Star Wars to become the third highest grossing movie ever. No wonder George Lucas looked so grumpy at last night’s Golden Globe Awards ceremony where Avatar won Read more…

Disney’s back to basics, The Princess and the Frog, took the top spot at the box office this weekend, as expected, with all of the marketing muscle the studio put behind their first 2D animated offering in years. That effort seems to have paid off at the multiplex and at retail stores. According to the LA Times, Princess related merchandise has been going fast. Disney Consumer Products Chairman Andy Mooney, said, Read more…

The Blind Side continues to strike a chord with audiences, beating out the rest of the competition at the box office this weekend. It would have been impossible to predict the movie’s success when it was released the same week as Twilight over a busy holiday weekend and much of its appeal is being attributed to Sandra Bullock. It was an exciting weekend at the box office, with an amazing success and several major wipeouts. Paranormal Activity scared up a good chunk of the pre-Halloween box office, easily overtaking the rest of the new releases. The horror pic’s success is all the more remarkable considering the fact that it was Read more…

Chalk it up to good timing. Couples Retreat certainly benefited from being the only major new release this weekend, grossing an estimated $35M to take the top spot at the box office. At the LA premiere, actor/director/writer Jon Favreau, who penned the screenplay with fellow costar Vince Vaughn, described his inspiration for the movie, saying, Read more…

Zombieland, took the top spot at the box office this weekend. It was a surprise success with both audiences and critics and it far surpassed most expectations, including those of its stars, apparently. Woody Harrelson has made it a point to mention in most of the promotional interviews that he had low when expectations when he was sent the script, but once he read through it, thought it was Read more…

It wasn’t a great weekend for new releases, and, as I predicted, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs once again claimed the number one spot at the box office. The 3D kids pic earned another $24.6M for a new cume of $60M. Coming in a distant second place, with $15M, was the Bruce Willis robot thriller Surrogates. To compare it to other Willis-starring movies: its opening wasn’t as Read more…
